Candidates for the Presidency of the Republic in the 2018 elections: see who they are

We can confirm Senator Alvaro Dias as a presidential candidate in a convention on Saturday (4), in Curitiba. The deputy of the plaque is the economist Paulo Rabello de Castro of the PSC, who gave up his own candidacy.

Dias meets the fourth senatorial term (three consecutive since 1999 and one from 1983 to 1987). Between 1987 and 1991, he was governor of Paraná. He began his political career at the then PMDB, now MDB. He then passed PST and PP until joining the PSDB in 1994.

In 2001, he was expelled for acting against party guidelines, but returned in 2003 and restarted in January 2016, to enter the PV. The following year, I went to the PTN, the party for which I announced the pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic in November during an event in Rio de Janeiro.



Cabo Daciolo (Patriot)

The Patriot officialized the election of Cape Daciolo as the candidate of the acronym to the Presidency of the Republic at its national convention on Saturday (4). The deputy in the plate is the pedagogue Suelene Balduino Nascimento, also affiliated to the Patriot.

Benevenuto Daciolo Fonseca dos Santos, 42, was elected a federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro in the 2014 elections. I will run for the first time in the presidency.

Ciro Gomes (PDT)

The PDT defined the name of Ciro Gomes as the presidential candidate at a party convention on July 20 in Brasilia. Senator Kátia Abreu, also of the PDT, will be the candidate for vice, party chairman Carlos Lupi said in a ruling that should be made official on Monday.

Current vice president of the party, Ciro Gomes was Minister of the Treasury between September 1994 and January 1995, period of the government of Itamar Franco and beginning of the government Fernando Henrique Cardoso. He was also Minister of National Integration between January 2003 and March 2006, in the first term of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

I have presided over the presidency twice (1998 and 2002, defeated in both). He was governor of Ceará, mayor of Fortaleza and state and federal deputy for Ceará. Already joined seven parties (PDS, PMDB, PSDB, PPS, PSB, PROS and PDT).


Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB)

The PSDB confirmed the order of Geraldo Alckmin to the Presidency of the Republic at his national convention on Saturday (4). The deputy candidate is Senator Ana Amélia (PP).

A doctor of formation, Geraldo Alckmin began his public career in Pindamonhangaba, where he was elected councilor in 1973. Later, he was mayor of the city and state and federal deputy for São Paulo. In 1986, he was elected federal constituent deputy. In 1988, he left the then PMDB to found the PSDB. In 2001, he assumed the government of São Paulo after the death of then-governor Mario Covas. He was reelected in 2002.

In 2006, Alckmin disputed the Presidency and lost to the then President Lula. In 2010, he was elected national president of the PSDB and announced the pre-candidacy for the Planalto Palace.

Guilherme Boulos (PSOL)

The PSOL confirmed at the national convention on July 21, in São Paulo, the choice of Guilherme Boulos as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. The candidate for vice president is the indigenous activist Sonia Guajajara, also of PSOL.

Boulos is 36 years old and coordinator of the Movement of the Homeless Workers (MTST). He will run for president for the first time. Before becoming leader of the MTST, Boulos was a student militant in the Union of Communist Youth and graduated in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo (USP).

I have joined PSOL in March. In the same month, it was launched as a pre-candidate after receiving a majority of the disputed votes with three other party names.


Henrique Meirelles (MDB)

The MDB officially nominated Henrique Meirelles on August 2 at a convention in Brasilia. The former governor of Rio Grande do Sul Germano Rigotto, also of the MDB, will be the vice in the plate.

Former Finance Minister Michel Temer, Meirelles made a career as a financial executive. He held the presidency of Bank of Boston in Brazil between 1984 and 1996, when he was elected president of the company.

In 2002, Meirelles was elected federal deputy for the PSDB of Goiás. In 2003, he assumed the presidency of the Central Bank, chosen by then President Lula. He commanded the BC until 2010, when the Lula government ended. In April of this year, I traded the PSD for the MDB. I have returned to join the government in 2016, as finance minister, guest Temer, who took over after the departure and subsequent impeachment of Dilma Rousseff.


Jair Bolsonaro (PSL)

The PSL confirmed the federal deputy Jair Bolsonaro the candidate of the legend to the Presidency of the Republic on July 22, in Rio de Janeiro. The candidate for vice will be General Hamilton Mourão, of the PRTB.

Bolsonaro holds the seventh consecutive term as deputy. On January 5, the Congressman left the Christian Social Party (PSC) and announced that it would join the PSL. Shortly after, announced that by the acronym would be pre-candidate to the Presidency, ninth legend to which it became affiliated.

Currently, he is a criminal defendant in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for alleged crime of apology for rape and injury, for claiming that he would not rape Congresswoman Maria do Rosário (PT-RS) because she "does not deserve it." The defense denies that Bolsonaro made apology for rape.

João Amoêdo (New)

The New Party officialized the candidacy of John Amoide to the Presidency of the Republic on Saturday (4). He will run the vice presidential candidate for university professor Christian Lohbauer, 51.

The 55-year-old Rio entrepreneur made his career as a business executive and in November he was announced as a pre-candidate for president of the New Party. Amoecido is one of the founders of the acronym, which he presided between September 2015 and July 2017, when he left because of the pre-candidacy.

Graduated in Civil Engineering and Management, João Amoedo had most of his professional experience in financial institutions. He was vice president of Unibanco and member of the board of directors of Itaú-BBA. In 2011, I joined the Board of Directors of João Fortes. In the same year, I participated in the New Party.


João Goulart Filho (PPL)

The PPL officially officiated on Sunday (5), at a national convention in São Paulo, the name of João Vicente Goulart, also known as João Goulart Filho, the party candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. The professor of the Catholic University of Brasília (UCB) Léo Alves is the vice in the plate.

Son of former President João Goulart, overthrown by the military coup of 1964, Goulart Filho founded an institute in honor of his father and will run for president for the first time. He is the author of the book "Jango and Me: Memories of an Exile Without a Turn".


José Maria Eymael (DC)

The DC confirmed at the national convention on July 28, in São Paulo, the election of José Maria Eymael as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. The candidate for vice president is Pastor Helvio Costa.

National president of DC, Eymael has played four times the Presidency of the Republic (1998, 2006, 2010 and 2014, defeated in all). Federal constituent deputy in 1988, the candidate held two terms in the Chamber of Deputies (between 1987 and 1995).

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT)

The PT confirmed in a national convention on Saturday (4), in São Paulo, the candidacy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the Presidency of the Republic. The candidate for vice will be the elder of São Paulo Fernando Haddad, also of the PT.

The metallurgist and former unionist is running for the presidency for the sixth time. I have held the position for two consecutive terms (2003-2006 and 2007-2010).

Lula has been imprisoned since the beginning of April, convicted in a second instance in the case of the triplex in Guarujá to twelve years and a month in prison, which, according to the Clean Sheet Act, makes him ineligible. But the issue needs to be decided by the TSE and can only be judged after the official registration.


Manuela D'Ávila (PCdoB)

The PCdoB officially made the candidacy of Manuela D'Ávila to the Presidency of the Republic in a convention on August 1 in Brasilia. It will be the first time that the party has had its own candidacy since 1989. Until then, PCdoB had integrated coalitions headed by the PT. The vice-candidate has not yet been defined.

Journalist, Manuela is 36 years old and started the political career in the student movement. He was vice-president of the National Union of Students (UNE) in 2003. In 2004, he was elected councilor in Porto Alegre.

Two years later, in 2006, she was elected federal deputy, re-elected in 2010. Since 2015, she has been a state congresswoman in Rio Grande do Sul. The pre-candidacy for the Presidency was announced on November 5, 2017 by PCdoB . She also competed twice in the city of Porto Alegre in 2012 and 2016, but was not elected.

Marina Silva (Rede)

The Sustainability Network officialized the candidacy of Marina Silva to the Presidency at its national convention on Saturday (4). The party also confirmed Eduardo Jorge (PV) as a candidate for vice.

Marina was a state deputy in Acre (1991-1994) and a senator from the same state for two terms (1995 to 2010). She graduated from the Senate from 2003 to 2008, when she held the position of minister of the Environment in the Lula government.

Joined the PT since 1986, she left the Legend in 2009 to join the PV, a party for which she ran for the Presidency in 2010, but was unable to reach the second round. In 2014, I applied again, this time by PSB.


Vera Lúcia (PSTU)

Vera Lúcia's candidacy for the PSTU was confirmed on July 20 at a party convention. Professor Hertz Dias, from the public network of Maranhão, was announced as vice on the plate. There will be no coalition in the PSTU.

Vera Lucia is 50 years old and has been a member of the PT, but was expelled from the party in 1992 along with members of the political group Socialist Convergence, which later founded the PSTU. She was a candidate for mayor of Aracaju in 2012 and holds a degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS).

Hertz Dias, 47, is a militant black movement member of the Red Slang group, which composes songs of protest.
